MT. VERNON (WMIX) – Investigations in recent weeks into increased gun activity in Mt. Vernon led local police to execute a search warrant Friday of a Mt. Vernon home where multiple firearms were reportedly seized and two juveniles were taken into custody.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, the detective division identified a group of subjects believed to be involved in multiple offenses involving firearms.

As a result of the investigations, the detective division began working with the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office and were able to secure a search warrant for a home at 1010 Oakland in Mt. Vernon.

Then early Friday morning, the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department High-Risk Team served the search warrant at the home where two juveniles were located inside and detained.

During a search of the home, detectives located five firearms. Two of the firearms were previously reported stolen. One of the firearms, a shotgun, had the barrel cut down making it illegal or a “sawed off” shotgun.

One of the detained juveniles was released after questioning. The second, a 17-year-old, was taken into custody on charges of Armed Violence, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of Stolen Firearms, and Possession of an Illegal Firearm (sawed-off shotgun).

The juvenile was processed at the Mt. Vernon Police Department and detained in the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Due to the age of the juvenile, no further information or photos will be released. The juvenile remains under investigation from previous offenses in Mt. Vernon.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department continues to investigate the previous offenses and additional charges involving other persons is likely.
