HERRIN – A man has been charged with Aggravated Arson and Aggravated Domestic Battery along with several other offenses in connection with a disturbance and fire that happened Thursday morning in the 600 block of North 6th Street in Herrin.
Herrin Police say Doneil J. McKenzie is being held in the Williamson County Jail until further notice.
At 6:40 a.m. Thursday, police responded to the disturbance and found a female victim at an adjacent address with injuries to her body and face consistent with being in a physical altercation.
The victim told police she had been battered by McKenzie, who was her boyfriend, and she then fled the apartment. After getting information from her, police went to the two-story apartment located on North 6th Street with hopes of finding McKenzie.
Police found McKenzie at the apartment, and while they were detaining him there, they noticed smoke and flames coming from inside. Police went inside the apartment to see if anyone else was there. No one was found. Police then cleared the adjacent apartments for safety.
Herrin Fire, Herrin Police investigators and the State Fire Marshal all responded a short time later. During their investigation it was determined the fire inside the apartment was intentionally set.
Police say more information will be provided as it becomes available.
