PIOPOLIS – John “Sonny” Anselment Jr., 87, of Piopolis, passed away Feb. 18, 2026, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 23, 1938, to John and Birdie (Kaufman) Anselment in Piopolis. On Sept. 7, 1959, he married Betty Lou Kirsch in Piopolis. They spent 66 years by each other’s side.

Sonny was a dedicated farmer, first working alongside his father and later with his son at Anselment Farms. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis, where he served on the Parish Council and Holy Name Society.

A skilled woodworker, Sonny also enjoyed boating at Rend Lake and family vacations to the Lake of the Ozarks. He will be remembered for his stubbornness, the twinkle in his eye and the loving partnership he shared with his wife, Betty.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Debra (Kent) Karcher and Pamela (John) Carrell; six grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Eric) Alberter, Danielle (Lee) Hutcheson, Kacy (Rich) Furjanic, Taylor (Devon) Rapp, Jill Karcher and Remington Carrell (Stephanie Korte); and five great-grandchildren, Camdyn and Emmie Alberter and Rian, Luke and Mark Hutcheson.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Richard.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at the church, starting with a rosary followed by a funeral Mass. Church doors will open at 9:30 a.m..

Memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
