A Metropolis Officer stopped a vehicle with no registration at 12th and Coburn. A computer check revealed that the driver, Angelia K. Jackson, 39, did not have a valid driver’s license, and that the vehicle’s registration had been suspended due to lack of insurance. A search of the vehicle revealed a maroon purse containing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Jackson was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, operation of a vehicle with suspended registration, and driving without a valid license. She was released on a notice to appear.

Metropolis Officers responded to a disturbance at the Super City Bar and Grill. Upon arrival, they learned that Eric A. Stoner, 40, of Metropolis, had been yelling at staff and customers and refused to leave. A female staff member, who was observed crying, reported that Stoner had entered the kitchen and begun cooking. As a Metropolis Sergeant attempted to take Stoner into custody, he resisted, tried to pull away, and yelled obscenities and threats. At the Massac County Detention Center, Stoner continued threatening the Sergeant and caused issues with a jail trustee. He was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespass to property, and resisting a peace officer. He was released on a notice to appear.

While returning from a meeting in Paducah, the Metropolis Police Chief was passed at high speed on the left shoulder of I-24 (milepost 2.5) by a black Ford Mustang. Moments later, Massac County dispatch advised all units that McCracken County authorities were attempting to stop a stolen Mustang on I-24. After clearing the construction zone, the Chief initiated a traffic stop at milepost 38, but a pursuit ensued westbound on I-24. The Mustang exited at Big Bay Road, traveled eastbound, then turned south on IL Route 145.

Dispatch advised the suspect was possibly armed with a handgun. The Mustang nearly struck a Massac County Deputy head-on before veering into and out of a ditch, continuing southbound. A Metropolis Sergeant deployed stop sticks near Marion Road, deflating the left front tire. Approximately one mile later, the vehicle crashed into a wooded area north of Franklin School Road. The suspect fled on foot into the heavily wooded area.

A perimeter was established with assistance from Metropolis Police, Massac County Deputies, and Illinois State Police Troop 10. Krypto, the Metropolis K-9, was deployed. After approximately four hours, the suspect—identified as Robert H. Browning, 30, homeless, originally from St. Louis, MO—was apprehended by Massac County Deputies after emerging from an abandoned house where he had hidden in the attic under insulation.

Browning was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding police, speeding more than 35 mph over the limit, and other traffic offenses. Due to the SAFE-T Act, he was released on a notice to appear. However, Browning was also wanted in St. Louis on a felony charge of sexual assault of a child and in Franklin County for forgery. Paducah Police are pursuing warrants related to the Mustang theft. Browning was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center on the outstanding warrants.
