CARBONDALE – A Carbondale man is facing charges after Carbondale Police recently responded to a business in the 500 block of East Main Street for a report of a man yelling at customers while brandishing a large knife.

According to Carbondale Police, around 11:18 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, officers located the man, later identified as 46-year-old Shiron D. Smith of Carbondale, in the 100 block of South Graham Street. Smith initially complied with officers and stopped, but then attempted to flee on foot. Smith ran for a brief moment before falling down. Smith refused the officers’ commands and efforts to place him in handcuffs. Once he was taken into custody, officers found Smith was still in possession of a large knife. Smith was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Smith was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was also found to be wanted on Jackson County Failure to Appear arrest warrants for prior charges of Resisting a Police Officer and Criminal Damage to Property.

Smith was lodged in the Jackson County Jail.

Carbondale Police say the investigation into the incident continues.
