MT. VERNON (WMIX) – A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man was formally charged Tuesday in Jefferson County Court with four Class X felonies stemming from a shooting, police pursuit and crash early Christmas morning.

Maliq Petties remains in the Jefferson County Jail where he was taken following a wrong-way crash with a Mt. Vernon police officer on Interstate 57.

He was formally charged Tuesday with aggravated battery for the alleged shooting in the 300 block of Ninth Street.

A Mt. Vernon patrol officer reportedly witnessed the shooting and attempted to subdue Petties, who fled the scene in a vehicle.

The pursuit west on Broadway reached speeds of 100 miles per hour before proceeding northbound on southbound Interstate 57. Petties reportedly crashed into a Mt. Vernon squad car.

In addition to the aggravated battery charge, Petties is facing three counts armed violence.

He was scheduled for a detention hearing Wednesday afternoon before Associate Judge Sonja Ligon.
