MT. VERNON (WMIX) – A two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 57 south of Mt. Vernon resulted in one person being airlifted for treatment of injuries.

According to the Illinois State Police, two people were injured in the rear-end collision just before 8 a.m. Wednesday at the 82-mile marker of I-57.

Reports indicate an SUV was traveling faster than a car ahead of and struck the slower vehicle in the rear. The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control.

The SUV then ran off the northbound lanes and through a fence before it came to a stop. The driver of the SUV was reportedly uninjured.

The car that was struck reportedly rolled multiple times before coming to a stop. Jefferson Fire reportedly had to extricate both the driver and passenger. The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries, while a passenger was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment.
