BENTON – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Wednesday for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to Sheriff Kyle Bacon, the sheriff’s office, while working in cooperation with the Benton Police Department and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, began searching for 35-year-old Jeffrey M. Shillito Tuesday.

Shillito is a convicted sex offender that is required to register. It was found that Shillito was registered at an address in Benton but believed to be actually living at a residence in rural West Frankfort.

Franklin County Sheriff’s detectives and uniform patrol located Shillito at a rural West Frankfort home Wednesday and was soon placed under arrest.

Shillito is currently in the Franklin County Jail charged with two counts of Unlawful Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Due to the fact that Shillito has previously been convicted of failing to register, both charges were increased to Class 2 felonies. Bond has not yet been set.
