MARION – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it takes dam safety seriously and is planning a study to evaluate the need for potential spillway repairs associated with Little Grassy Lake at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in Marion.

Officials say lake levels at Little Grassy Lake will remain lowered and have targeted a maximum elevation of 495 feet for 2023. They are also expecting that the lake will remain at this level until agency staff can fully evaluate recently identified main dam spillway issues.

A preliminary study is being planned to evaluate the spillway repair alternatives. This study will produce a recommended plan to reduce risk to the dam. In order to decrease any future risk to the dam regarding recently observed conditions, the Dam Safety Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has strongly recommended this lower pool elevation.

A 495 feet pool elevation will result in a minimum of a 4 feet drop lower than normal pool elevation. Currently there are no restrictions on fishing or boating on Little Grassy Lake, although recreation visitors are advised to be more aware of submerged objects in the water which can be a hazard to an unwary boat operator.
