According to Sheriff Bennie Vick, scammers are sending unsolicited text messages or emails claiming to be from the Illinois Secretary of State office. In some instances, the scammers copy the Secretary of State website logos and masthead to appear official.
Sheriff Vick says these texts and emails are scams and recipients should not click on any links or provide any information. Visiting these various fraudulent websites could place malware on the recipient’s devices or trick them into disclosing sensitive personal information. The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has been contacted and advised they never request personal information, like Social Security numbers, via text message or email.
The sheriff says if you receive one of these text or emails, delete it and do not click on them or provide any of your personal information.
