SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – The U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed burns across the area during the upcoming days, weather permitting.
The following areas will be affected: Beatty Branch, Rocky Branch and Pleasant Valley all northwest of Golconda, Kickasola east of Metropolis and Cedar Lake Kudzu west of Makanda along Cedar Lake.
Officials say with turkey hunting season in mind, prescribed fire activity will be limited to the afternoons with extreme caution for the presence of hunters. These prescribed burns are designed to promote oak and hickory forest ecosystems and improve wildfire defense within communities.
Fire personnel plan for and carefully monitor the ignition conditions and smoke dispersion to minimize the impacts to roadways and communities. You can expect to see smoke in the early morning to mid-afternoon. Fire personnel will continue to patrol and monitor burn units until they are declared out.
