Three Recently Sentenced on Various Charges in Franklin County

BENTON – The following information was released by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s office on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021.

A man was recently sentenced in Franklin County to state prison for stabbing his mother with a knife and shooting her in the back of the head during a struggle at their rural Thompsonville home in March 2018.

According to the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s office, the mother of 36-year-old Jeffery Herrell survived the stabbing and gunshot wound and fled to her neighbor’s house for help.

Jeffrey Herrell was arrested and has been in the Franklin County Jail since then. Herrell was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, felon in possession of a weapon, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. On Oct. 13, Herrell pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm and was sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The case was investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and prosecuted by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office.


A man was recently sentenced in Franklin County to state prison for stealing items from a Pershing home in July 2019 and possessing a stolen ATV in August 2019.

According to the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s office, on July 24, 2019, 33-year-old Derrick Webber took several power tools including a chainsaw, weed eater and drill from a home in Pershing. Some of the items were later located at a local pawn shop. Webber was arrested and charged with theft.

On August 12, 2019, following his release from jail on the theft charge, Webber was found in the garage of a vacant house in West Frankfort, working on a stolen ATV. Webber was charged with unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle. On May 6, 2020, Webber pleaded guilty in both cases.

On October 20, 2021, Webber was sentenced on each case to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Webber was also ordered to pay a fine and make restitution to the owners of the stolen items.

The cases were investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and the West Frankfort Police Department and prosecuted by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office.


A man was recently sentenced in Franklin County to state prison on drug and gun charges.

According to the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office, on September 20, 2021, Benton Police Officer Michael Cain made a traffic stop on a black Chevy pickup truck for illegal lane usage and a missing headlight. The driver of the vehicle, 38-year-old Monte Johnson, was a convicted felon on mandatory supervised release (formerly known as parole).

Officer Cain searched Johnson and the truck and located a 9mm handgun and over 100 grams of methamphetamine. Johnson was charged with unlawful possession of 100 — 400 grams of methamphetamine and felon in possession of a weapon.

On October 27, 2021, Johnson pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years on the meth charge and three years on the weapons charge in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The case was investigated by the Benton Police Department and prosecuted by Franklin County State’s Attorney Abby Dinn.
