ULLIN – Southern Seven Health Department (S7HD) reports that it has cancelled the upcoming Southern Illinois Miners Night scheduled for Friday, August 20, siting increasing rates of COVID-19 in the region as the cause. The event is being rescheduled for spring 2022.
Southern Seven regrets this decision, but believes cancelling is in the best interest of residents.
“This event was meant to be a community celebration for all we have been through this past year,” said Shawnna Rhine, S7HD Community Outreach Coordinator. “But with COVID cases on the rise, and many in our region not vaccinated, it is more important to protect our most vulnerable neighbors.”
Proceeds from the event were to benefit community programs conducted through Southern Seven Health Department’s Healthy Lifestyles Committee. The Department plans to use the proceeds from the rescheduled spring game in the same manner.
As the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to rise throughout Southern Illinois, Southern Seven is asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and others healthy by getting vaccinated if possible, wearing a mask in public places regardless of vaccination status, and maintaining social distancing.
