CARBONDALE – The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has launched a pilot program to help farmers deal with the stress of the job. It’s called the Farm Family Resource Initiative and aims to improve the mental and physical health of Illinois farm owners and their families.
Karen Stallmann, an Agriculture Resource Specialist at SIU, says a farmer already has many issues to deal with and the pandemic made things worse.
The helpline number is 1-833-FARM-SOS.
In addition to a new telephone helpline, there are outreach programs on how to deal with stress. The program is debuting in six counties but Stallmann hopes with additional funding the program will go statewide.
