Pedestrian Hit by School Bus in Jackson County Wednesday

MURPHYSBORO – An accident involving a pedestrian and a school bus happened Wednesday morning in Jackson County.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:40 a.m., the sheriff’s office received reports about the accident on Giant City Road at the entrance to Wildwood Mobile Home Park in rural Carbondale.

Deputies along with the Jackson County Ambulance Service and first responders from the Makanda Township Fire Department and Carbondale Township Fire Department arrived.

The sheriff’s office says evidence on scene indicated a Vienna school bus taking students to a field trip at SIU was going north on Giant City Road when the pedestrian crossed the road in the northbound lane in front of the school bus.

The pedestrian involved in the accident was identified as 52-year-old James Craft of Carbondale.

Craft was taken by the Jackson County Ambulance Service to a local hospital and was later airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

No students or staff on the school bus were injured in the accident.

The roadway was closed for two hours while crews investigated the scene.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
