Mt. Vernon Man Flees from February Traffic Stop, Found in Washington County Wednesday

MT. VERNON – A Mt. Vernon man who fled a February traffic stop was taken into custody Wednesday by members of the Mt. Vernon Police Department and United States Marshals Service.

On Feb. 28, an Mt. Vernon Police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle that initially fled and the driver, 29-year-old Terrance D. Williams, exited the vehicle on foot in the area of 10th and Lamar. Officers were not able to locate Williams, however they did find a loaded firearm in the area.

Police detectives and a crime scene technician began an investigation of the traffic stop. A warrant was then issued charging Williams with being an armed habitual offender. Police received information indicating Williams had left Jefferson County and even possibly the southern Illinois area altogether, so they requested assistance in locating him from the Marshals Service. The investigation lead law enforcement to an area of Ashley in Washington County where Williams was eventually taken into custody.

After his arrest, Williams was transported back to the Jefferson County Justice Center where he is being held on a $250,000 bond.
