MT. VERNON – Mt. Vernon City leaders braved threatening skies Friday morning to turn dirt at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mt. Vernon Police Department.

Mayor John Lewis confirmed the project being built by Holland Construction Services will be completed by this time next year.

Lewis noted problems the current facility has had with efficiency and security explaining that the MVPD moved into its current building in 1979.

Councilman Ray Botch was a part of city government in 1970 when the MVPD was in the utility department building.

He told the crowd gathered Friday that in 1977 the city spent $300,000 to buy and retrofit the, at that time, already 40 year old building, in which the PD is still currently residing.

The project will be funded out of the city’s budget and there are some bond proceeds from the city’s last bond issuance that can be used for construction.
