METROPOLIS – The Metropolis Police Department released the following information on Monday, March 6, 2023.

February 20, 2023
Metropolis Police responded to River Ag on Yasoda Street for a theft report. Officers learned that a large amount of copper was stolen from the facility. Officers were able to view video of the theft. Officers contacted Holt’s recycling and advised them of the theft. Officers were able to determine who the pick up truck and trailer belonged to that was used in the theft. Further investigation revealed that the owner of the truck was out of town at the time of the theft but that his vehicle was borrowed by Cale A Lewis, 41, of Metropolis. Officers were advised by Holt’s that they had received some of the copper. Upon locating Lewis, the rest of the copper was recovered. In all, approximately $4,500 worth of copper was recovered. Lewis was arrested and charged with Felony Theft. He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 21, 2023
A Metropolis officer stopped a blue Chevrolet Impala for speeding 50 mph in a 30 mph zone on 5th St and Ophia St. A computer check on the driver, Hannah L Walker, 23, of Calvert City, KY revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. Walker was cited for Speeding and Driving while Suspended. Walker was released on a notice to appear.

February 22, 2023
Paige A Gelso, 20, of Metropolis was arrested in the 1200 block of E. 5th Street. Gelso was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Massac County for Driving while License Suspended. Gelso was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 24, 2023
Jeremy L. Shumaker, 36, of Paducah, KY was arrested at Big John’s. Shumaker was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Massac County for Driving while License Suspended. Shumaker was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 25, 2023
Metropolis officers were called to Massac Memorial Hospital for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, Officers observed Joshua D. Coontz, 45, of Elgin, IL. Coontz was yelling and screaming and he refused to listen to the officers, trying to walk away. Officers learned that Coontz had threatened the security guards at the hospital and they wished to sign complaints. Coontz continued to be combative and belligerent. Upon arrival at the jail, he struck a deputy in the chest with his shoe. Coontz was charged with Aggravated Battery, Disorderly Conduct and Resisting/Obstructing Arrest. He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Police were called to Thrive Dispensary for a disturbance. Upon arrival, Officers observed a male arguing with two women in the parking lot. There were two employees of Thrive standing there as well. As the officer approached, the subject refused to listen. He refused all requests and commands made by the officer. Darrell W. Green, 36, of unkown address in Tennessee, was arrested and charged with Obstructing a Peace Officer. He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 26, 2023
Metropolis officers were called to a disturbance at 1909 Ferry St. Upon arrival, they met with a person who stated that she wanted to retrieve her belongings as she wanted to move out of the residence. While she was packing her stuff, a handgun fell to the floor. A computer check revealed that the handgun had been reported stolen out of Paducah, KY. The scene was secured and a search warrant was obtained. The search revealed approximately 45 grams (over 200 pills) of Fentanyl, 5 (3 reported stolen) handguns and other contraband. Joshua T. Lindsey, 24, of Metropolis was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver. Jordyn A . Smith, 21, of Kevil, KY was charged with Possession of a Stolen Handgun. Jerry T. Helton, 67, of Metropolis was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and no valid FOID card. All were lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 28, 2023
Metropolis officers were called to the alley near the 1000 block of E. 6th St. for a disturbance. Upon arrival, they met with James Clint Stevens, 41, of Metropolis who appeared to be under the influence and hallucinating. A search revealed him to be in possession of two clear baggies containing suspected Methamphetamine. Stevens was charged with possession of Methamphetamine and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

A Metropolis officer observed a female he recognized as Phoebe N. Davis, 38, of Metropolis walking down Broadway St. The officer was aware that Davis was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Massac County for Residential Burglary. Davis denied who she was and kept giving the officer a fake name. Officers brought her into the police department to confirm her identity. Once Davis was properly identified she was also charged with obstructing identification. A search found her to be in Possession of Meth, Drug Paraphernalia and Nortriptyline, a controlled substance. Davis was also charged with these offenses and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Christina L. Avila, 52, of Metropolis was arrested in the 1300 block of Filmore. Avial was wanted on warrants issued by Massac County. One warrant for Domestic Battery and the other for Criminal Trespass to Property. Avila was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Shane R. Oliver, 42, of Metropolis was observed at the Spence Apartments. Oliver was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Massac County for drug related charges. Oliver was arrested and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

March 1, 2023
A Metropolis officer stopped a white Ford pick-up truck for speeding (69 mph in a posted 45 mph zone) on US 45 near the Massac Creek Bridge. The driver, Cory A. Hendrick, 26, of Clarksville, TN advised the officer that he did not have a driver’s license. A computer check confirmed this. Hendrick was charged with Driving without a Valid Driver’s License and Speeding. He was released on bond.

The preceding information pertains to an arrest made by the Metropolis Police Department. This arrest was made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
