Man Facing Murder, Gun-related Charges in Weekend Death Investigation in Grayville

GRAYVILLE – A Grayville man is facing charges resulting from a death investigation that happened early Sunday morning in the 100 block of East Sycamore Street in Grayville.

According to Illinois State Police, the Edwards County State’s Attorney’s office Tuesday charged 56-year-old Steven S. Schmittler with three counts of First-degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Schmittler was taken into custody on scene Sunday.

Schmittler remains in custody at the White County Jail in Carmi.

The incident was jointly investigated by the Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) – Zone 8, Grayville Police Department, and the Edwards County States Attorney’s office. No further information will be disseminated at this time.
