Each year the Relay event features a Luminaria Ceremony dedicated to the honor of cancer survivors and to the memory of those who lost their battles. Luminaria bags honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Luminarias bags decorated with names of the people they’re dedicated to.
This touching ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. on June 4th, at which time all activities cease and everything goes silent. Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit with a glow stick in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. “A Luminaria is a special way to honor a special person.” commented Paula Jackson, Hamilton County Relay For Life Luminaria Chair.
The ceremony will also include a breaking of the glow sticks presentation along with the reading of the names of each person honored and remembered by Luminaria at the Relay For Life event.
Luminarias are available for a donation of $10 each. “We ask that Luminarias be purchased by May 20th so the bags can be prepared for the Relay For Life event,” added Jackson. They can be purchased by contacting Paula Jackson at 618-315-7223, any Relay For Life volunteer or participant, or by purchasing online at www.relayforlife.org/hamiltonIL.
