Joppa Power Plant Now Officially Closed

JOPPA – The Joppa Power Plant officially closed Wednesday as part of the Illinois Coal to Solar program.

The plant is only one of two Vistra Energy plants in Illinois scheduled to close by the end of the decade.

Vistra announced plans last year to close their Baldwin Power Plant in Randolph County and the Joppa Power Plant. Coal-fired power plants owned by Vistra in Ohio are also part of the closure program.

The company says the closures will significantly reduce their carbon footprint in the Midwest and help it achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The decision was made in part because of the Illinois Coal to Solar program, which aims for the state to be 100 percent green by 2050.

The state program will designate $40.7 million over a 10 year period to convert the power plant into a battery energy storage facility.

The first payments are expected to be issued in 2025 when the facilities are expected to be commercially operational.
