ISP Releases More Details into Tuesday’s Officer-involved Shooting in Carterville

CARTERVILLE – Illinois State Police Wednesday afternoon release more details into that officer-involved shooting in Carterville Tuesday afternoon.

According to ISP, the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 7 was requested by Carterville Police to assist with an officer-involved shooting involving two officers from the police department.

Just before 3 p.m., Carterville Police responded to a call of a man with a gun outside of a home in the 200 block of Dobson Street. A preliminary investigation revealed the two responding Carterville officers encountered a man with a shotgun on the front porch of the home. Officers repeatedly ordered the man to put down the shotgun; instead he raised the shotgun towards officers. The man, later identified as 52-year-old Joseph D. McGrath of Carterville, was struck by gunfire from Carterville officers and succumbed to his injuries. McGrath was pronounced dead on scene by the Williamson County Coroner. The Carterville officers were not hurt.

ISP Zone 7 Investigations is leading this open and on-going investigation while being assisted by ISP District 13 Patrol, ISP Crime Scene Services, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, the Carterville Police Department and the Williamson County Coroner’s Office.

No additional information will be released at this time by ISP DCI-Zone 7.
