MARION – Jeff Diederich, candidate for Sheriff in Williamson County, says Williamson County Board members are making the right call by considering approval of a proposal to use American Rescue Plan Act funds to provide backpay for deputies, correctional officers, telecommunicators and support personnel who worked during the pandemic.
“Everyone who works for the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is an essential worker, and they all worked regular hours during the pandemic last year,” Diederich said. “They did not have the ability to do their work from home. They were out on the streets, in the office, responding to accidents on the roads and taking care of inmates in the jail every single day. It just makes sense to use some of the earmarked money Williamson County is receiving from the American Rescue Plan Act to take care of the men and women who helped take care of all of us last year.”
Current Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick has sent a three-page letter to the Williamson County Board (see below) asking the board to provide back pay to everyone who works for the Sheriff’s Office including deputies, correctional officers, telecommunicators and support personnel.
“This is not going to have an impact on the County budget as this is federal money from the American Rescue Plan Act,” Diederich said. “There are some people who want to ‘defund the police,’ but we have an opportunity to rewrite the script and better fund law enforcement here in Williamson County. It is time we put support for law enforcement into action. I strongly support any plan that compensates our law enforcement professionals for the dangerous job they do to serve our communities. I can’t think of a better use of these federal funds that have been passed through to Williamson County than to reward the brave men and women at the Sheriff’s office who showed up to work every day during the pandemic. Please join me in showing our support for law enforcement.”
