Crash Kills 2 Southern Illinois Students, Missouri Woman in Union County

REYNOLDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Two Southern Illinois University-Carbondale graduate students and a Missouri woman have died after their vehicles collided on a highway early Thursday morning in Union County.

Illinois State Police say the crash that occurred about 4:15 a.m. Thursday on Illinois Route 3 just north of Old Cape Road killed 32-year-old Marie Meunier of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and students Pavan Swarna and Vamshi K. Pechetty, both 23, of Carbondale. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Union County Coroner.

Police say Meunier was driving a 2013 blue Fiat sedan when her car crossed the center line and struck the front of the 2019 Toyota sedan Swarna was driving. Three other SIU graduate students in Swarna’s vehicle were injured. An ambulance took them to a regional hospital for treatment.
