BROOKPORT – A Brookport man was taken into custody following a hours-long standoff with law enforcement from Massac County and Illinois State Police Friday afternoon in Brookport
According to Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor, sheriff’s deputies responded to an initial call for a domestic disturbance with possible shots being fired around 2:25 p.m. in the 1600 block of Greek Road in Brookport.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with a woman and three children. Deputies were able to get them to safety. It was discovered that a male suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jereme C. Parker of Brookport, was inside the home with a child under 1 year of age, and Parker was armed with a rifle. Parker released the young child to deputies shortly after. Parker barricaded himself inside the home.
Negotiations were conducted with Parker over the next few hours. After dark, Parker was seen leaving the home in an escape attempt. A short foot chase ensued with Parker. Parker was captured and taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. No one was injured during the ordeal.
Parker is charged with reckless discharge of firearm and felon in possession of a weapon. Further charges are pending upon review by the Massac County State’s Attorney office.
The Massac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Illinois State Police, Metropolis Police, Brookport Police, Illinois Department of Conservation Police, Massac Memorial Ambulance and the Brookport Fire Department.
