Experience/Lateral Police Officer Program
If you have two or more years of post-probationary work experience as a police officer and meet the outlined qualifications, you are eligible for the Lateral Police Officer Program. Applications for experienced police officers are accepted on an ongoing basis and are reviewed weekly. The hiring needs of the Department determine oral interviews.
Carbondale Entry-Level Police Officer Requirements
- Age 21 (20 with certain restrictions)
- Associate’s Degree (or 60 semester hours) – Education requirements go down with police experience and prior completion of a police academy
- No record of felony offenses or certain misdemeanor offenses
- U.S. Citizen
- Valid Driver’s License

The City of Carbondale requires its employees to live within a 20-mile radius starting from the intersection of West Walnut Street and South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.
