CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is thrilled to launch PLAN Carbondale – a community-driven initiative to prepare the city for the next decade and help make the city the best place it can be. Join the city as it works together to build a stronger Carbondale. Through collaboration, the city can build a more vibrant, inclusive city that meets the needs of all residents.
There will be many ways to participate in this process as the city develop updates for its comprehensive plan.
The public is invited to share ideas about the future of Carbondale at The Big Ideas Workshop on Wednesday, November 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., in Room 108 at the Carbondale Civic Center, located at 200 S. Illinois Ave. This workshop will feature activities for all ages through which participants can share their ideas for the future of Carbondale. The city has also launched a new website at PlanCarbondale.com, which will serve as a hub for information about the planning process and ways the public can get involved.
Pizza and light refreshments, as well as kids’ activities will be provided at this event, and free parking is available. Advanced registration at PlanCarbondale.com is encouraged. For those unable to attend, an online survey is available at PlanCarbondale.com.
The comprehensive plan the city is working towards is a long-term guide for land use, housing, transportation, parks and open space, economic development, and more. Since the last plan was adopted in 2010, the community has experienced many changes. The plan is generally updated every 10 to15 years, hence the creation of a new forward-thinking comprehensive plan that is now in process. The city’s planning staff is working with a volunteer steering committee representing a range of interests, backgrounds, and neighborhoods to help guide the process.
The planning process will be completed in spring of 2025. For more information, visit PlanCarbondale.com.
